Educate a Child

Donors can now directly influence a child's life with our Educate a Child program, which will handle all OPEN-funded scholarships.

The Educate a Child program is headed by Ms. Deepa Varadarajan and Ms. Prabha Natarajan, who will be the day-to-day contacts for the program. OPEN board members will continue to monitor the progress of the program.

Contributions are requested at three levels:

$50 toward annual school fees and supplies for a K-12 student.
$100 toward partial scholarship for a student in an Engineering or Vocational training program, through IGNITE.
$200 toward full scholarship for a student in an Engineering or a Vocational training program, through IGNITE.

Donors at the $100 and $200 levels will receive periodic personalized updates on the progress of their ward.

Four-year Engineering students

P. Marimuthu, age 18, is doing his first year in Civil Engineering at Tagore Engineering College in Vandalur. Marimuthu’s parents live in a village, and his father is a weaver. They couldn’t afford to feed him or send him to school. So, they sent him to an orphanage run by the Sri Ramakrishna Mission in Nerkundram.

He graduated from the General Cariappa School in Saligrammam as a General Machinist after a two-year vocational course. He scored 1079/1200 in his 12th examination.

Annual Fees: $641 DOB: Dec. 1, 1989

L. Bakiyalakshmi, age 18, is doing her first year in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Tagore Arts & Science in Chrompet. Bakiyalakshmi’s father makes Rs. 24,000 per annum. They live in Saligrammam.

She graduated from the General Cariappa School in Saligrammam after a two-year vocational course in Business Machines and Computer Programming. She scored 1090/1200 in her 12th examination.

Annual Fees: $641 DOB: Sept. 19, 1989

B. Vinodhini, age 19, is doing her second year Engineering at Easwari Engineering College in Ramapuram. Vinodhini’s father is a security guard. They live in K.K. Nagar.

She graduated from the Jaigopal Garodia Girls' High Secondary School in Saidapet with a score of 1123/1200 in her 12th examination.

Annual Fees: $1,413 DOB: Nov. 24, 1988

S. Sivaram, age 18, is doing his second year in Electronics and Communication Engineering at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore. Sivaram’s father is a mason. They live in Nesapakkam.

He graduated from the General Cariappa School in Saligrammam as a General Machinist after a two-year vocational course. He scored 1058/1200 in his 12th examination.

Annual Fees: $296; hostel fees $449 DOB: Aug. 21, 1989

Central Polytechnic two-year diploma students

G. Palanivel, age 18, is a first-year student enrolled in a Diploma in Computer Engineering at the Central Polytechnic in Taramani. Palanivel is a disabled student. His father is a house painter and his mother is a maid.

He graduated from the General Cariappa School after completing a two-year vocational course for General Machinists. He scored 1001/1200 in his 12th examination.

Annual Fees: $125 DOB: April 7, 1989

R. Karthik, age 18, is a first-year student enrolled in a Diploma in Computer Engineering at the Central Polytechnic in Taramani. He graduated from the General Cariappa School after completing a two-year course in Radio and Television Repair. He scored 997/1200 in his 12th examination. His annual fees for this year is around $125.

Karthik’s family income is Rs. 36,000 annually. They live in a rented house in Arumbakkam.

K.S. Raghunath, age 18, is a first-year student enrolled in a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the Central Polytechnic in Taramani. Raghunath’s father is a manual laborer and his mother is a housewife. They live in Alwarthirunagar.

He graduated from the General Cariappa School after a two-year vocational course in Auto Mechanics. He scored 1030/1200 in his 12th examination.

R. Srinivasan, age 18, is a first-year student enrolled in a Diploma in civil Engineering at the Central Polytechnic in Taramani. Parthiban’s father is a construction worker. They live in Iyyappathangal.

He graduated from the General Cariappa School after a two-year vocational course in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics. He scored 1000/1200 in his 12th examination.

G. Manikandan, age 19, is a first-year student enrolled in a Diploma in Computer Engineering at IRT Polytechnic College in Chennai. Manikandan’s father is a manual laborer and his mother is a house maid. They live in Alwarthirunagar.

He graduated from the General Cariappa School after a two-year vocational course in Auto Mechanics. He scored 831/1200 in his 12th examination.

S. Padmavathi, age 18, is a first-year student enrolled in a Diploma in Civil Engineering at the Chengalvaraya Naicker Technical Institute in Chennai. Padmavathi’s father abandoned the family. Her mother, Malarvizhi, works as a house maid and earns Rs. 12,000 per annum.

They live in Saligrammam. She scored 957/1200 in her 12th examination.
